What to Wear for Your Dog Photography Session
When planning your dog’s photo session, it’s easy to focus on their grooming, accessories, and personality, but don’t forget about yourself! Since you’ll be in some of the portraits too, choosing the right outfit makes a big difference in how your final images look and feel. The key is to be comfortable, confident, and true to yourself.
Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect outfit ** or download my free prep guide here: https://api.leadconnectorhq.com/widget/form/b7QbrmLGgCFKfIVcPyaQ
Dress for Comfort, But Not Too Casual
You want to feel relaxed in your photos, so avoid anything stiff or fussy. Think “nice, dressy casual” instead of loungewear. A polished look helps balance the fun, playful energy your pup will bring.
Keep It Simple with Colours & Patterns
Solid colours are always a safe choice. They create a timeless, classic look.
Avoid bright white and very light colours, they can reflect light too strongly and may not flatter, especially against darker pets.
Skip busy patterns, thick stripes, and big logos, these can distract the eye away from you and your dog.
Subtle patterns like pinstripes or small prints are fine if you prefer a little extra detail.
Hair & Makeup
Go natural. Style your hair and apply makeup the way you normally do. Heavy makeup or glittery products can look harsh or distracting on camera. If you have long hair, soft waves look beautiful in photos. For outdoor sessions, pinning the sides back a little helps keep hair out of your face on windy days. My tip, don’t stress blemishes, I can retouch them afterward for a natural, polished look.
Clothing Choices That Work Best
Skip sleeveless tops and very short skirts or dresses. Too much bare skin pulls attention away from your face and can make it tricky to sit or play comfortably with your dog. Opt for longer dresses, skirts, or pants, these allow more freedom of movement and look elegant in portraits. Show off tattoos if you have them, they add character and make your portraits uniquely you.
Shoes Complete the Look
The right footwear ties everything together. For outdoor sessions, pick comfortable shoes you can walk in. Stick to darker colours, bright shoes can steal focus from your face. Closed-toe shoes usually photograph best. If you’re wearing strappy sandals, treat yourself to a fresh pedicure, yes, the camera will notice those little details.
Final Tip: Be Yourself
At the end of the day, your photos should feel authentic to you. Choose outfits that reflect your personality and make you feel confident. When you’re comfortable, it shows in the photos, and that’s what makes them truly timeless.
Remember, the star of the show may be your dog, but the connection you share is what really shines through in your portraits.
