What to Expect at Your Dog Photo Session
The best photos come when dogs can simply be themselves, playing, posing, or just letting their personalities shine. Every dog is different, and that’s what makes each session so special. To help you prepare, here are a few tips for making the most of your time in front of the camera. Grooming & Prep
A fresh pup always photographs beautifully. Bathing your dog the day before the session is a great idea. When it comes to grooming, think about when your dog looks their best in their grooming cycle, whether that’s right after a trim or a week later when their coat has settled. Plan your appointment accordingly.
Arriving at the Location
Arrive about 5–10 minutes early so you and your pup have time for a quick walk. This helps your dog explore, get acclimated to new smells and sounds, and shake off some excitement before the session begins.
Although I’ll be thrilled to see you and your dog, I’ll do my best to stay calm and relaxed, dogs mirror our energy, and a calm environment leads to more natural photos.
What to Bring
Collars & Accessories: Feel free to dress up your dog in a fancy collar, bow, or bandana if that feels like “them.” These are your photos, choose what makes you happy.
Treats: I’ll bring some, but it’s always best to bring your own, especially if your dog has allergies or favorites.
Water: Staying hydrated keeps your dog comfortable throughout the session.
Cloth or Wipes: If your dog is a drooler, a quick clean-up here and there helps keep them photo-ready.
During the Session
Dog photography is all about patience and flexibility. We’ll repeat some actions, sit, stay, look here, and roll with the unexpected. If the moment calls for excitement and play, we’ll lean into that too, some of the best images happen in those in-between moments.
The Most Important Part: Have Fun!
Your dog doesn’t have to be perfect, and there’s no pressure for them to “perform.” This is about capturing their personality and the bond you share. So relax, laugh, and enjoy the experience, those genuine moments create the most treasured photos.
At the end of the day, it’s not about perfect poses, it’s about celebrating your dog, exactly as they are.
